Collecting used strings to give to those around the world who need them.

Why?

We want everyone to be able to make music, no matter how rich or poor they are.

In some countries, due to a lack of resources, people use strings from other instruments, play on fewer strings, make their own strings, or they stop playing completely.

If there are many strings available in one part of the world, no-one should have to give up playing music in another part because they can’t afford strings.

In the first Strings4All collection (1 Jan - 15 Feb 2021) we received an incredible 5,000 strings! They went to musicians in need in Colombia and Venezuela.

How can I donate strings?

You can give or send your strings to a volunteer coordinator - see the list below.

If you don’t see someone in your country/city, write to us and we’ll let you know how you can donate your strings.

Preparing the package

Gather your used strings (if you can, clean them) and put them in an envelope. Please include a piece of paper detailing what you’re sending:

·        Instrument (violin / viola / cello / double bass / guitar / harp)

·        Notes What strings they are, and how many of each

·        Size (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 7/8, 4/4)

If you don’t tell us, we may spend a long time working out what they are…

Sending your strings

Please contact one of our volunteer local coordinators to organise giving/sending them your strings:

Finding out who receives your strings

To make this even more meaningful and personal, we try to show the donor a picture of the person who receives their strings, and we tell the person receiving them where they came from.

If you’d like to take part, please write your name and town on the envelope.

We’ll then ask the recipient, if they want to and are comfortable doing so, to take a photo of themselves or their instrument, and we’ll put it up on our website next to your name.

Want to help us collect used strings?

We need people around the world who are willing to collect strings from their local area, package them for shipment, and then send them (we will look for sponsors to cover the shipment costs; you won’t need to pay this, unless you want to!).

Where are we looking for coordinators?

Everywhere! We already have some (see above!). You can either be an ongoing coordinator, or sign up for a one-off collection.

How will you collect the strings?

  • People will send you strings in the post

  • You can put a box in a public area (such as a conservatoire or concert hall)

How should you start?

Write to us to let us know you’re interested in being a coordinator.

This is a picture of a previous shipment that one of our team members, Dalina, organised in 2019. Be aware that as a coordinator you may receive a lot of strings, and it may take you some time preparing the shipment! But it will be worth all of the effort :)
