Get to know plant-based foods full of protein

What is this task trying to achieve?

1. To make us aware of the fact that meat and dairy foods have the worst impact on the planet.

According to researchers at Oxford University, vegetarians have roughly half the food-related carbon footprint of meat eaters. Other studies have shown that eating less and meat can be the biggest step we can take in reducing our impact on the planet.

2. To help us find out which plant-based foods are high in protein, and inspire us twice a week this month to include them in our meals.

IMPORTANT POINT: Please don’t feel like you have to stop eating meat and dairy. That’s definitely not the point of this task. The idea is to realise that protein is found in many non-meat sources and to find ways of incorporating these into your diet.

How should I do it?

  1. Here’s a list of 17 plant-based foods which are full of protein.

  2. Try to include one or more of these foods in two of your meals over the next week. Search online for recipe ideas (we often use this website).

  3. If you find something really tasty, please share it with us!

Things to bear in mind

  • Many people choose tofu (which comes from soy beans) as a plant based source of protein. When buying this, make sure it is organic (otherwise the pesticides may not only be in your food, but also kill important insects), and check where the soy beans come from. Unfortunately rain forests around the world are being destroyed to make room for soy bean farming. If you see the soy beans are coming from Brazil, avoid the product.
